Before adding panels or a second inverter, check the existing plant, roof, electrical interfaces and utility position. Use this brief to request a clearly scoped solar expansion quotation.
A factory adds a production line, takes an adjoining building or changes its working hours. The existing solar plant still operates, but the owner wants more daytime generation. The useful starting question is how the extension will connect to the existing assets and electricity account. A quotation based only on extra panel capacity leaves the important decisions unresolved.
Treat an expansion as a change to an operating installation. This guide helps owners assemble a brief and compare responsibilities before ordering equipment. For a new system or a change from ordinary grid-tied generation to backup power, first read the grid-tied and hybrid architecture guide.
Start with the original handover file: array layout, single-line diagram, module and inverter model numbers, commissioning records and utility correspondence. Match those records to the equipment on site. Identify later replacements, disconnected strings and changes to the building. Missing drawings belong in the assessment scope; they are not evidence that the existing installation can accept another array.
Supply recent electricity bills and, where available, interval import, export and generation records. Explain the new working pattern, weekend demand and planned machinery. Separate an expansion need from an existing performance problem. If generation has fallen, use the underproduction assessment guide before assuming that more panels will solve it.

Request a reasoned selection among the feasible options. Retaining an inverter can avoid replacing a working asset, but spare-looking terminals do not establish usable capacity. A separate inverter can create a clearer boundary between old and new equipment, while still requiring review of the shared installation.
Ask the designer to document module electrical characteristics, string arrangement and the inverter's voltage, current and MPPT limits under the design conditions. Manufacturer instructions can impose arrangement-specific requirements: SMA's cited model instructions illustrate why a rule from one inverter must not be assumed for another. A module's advertised wattage alone cannot settle this review.
Record connector manufacturers and types when assessing retained strings. Stäubli warns against cross-mating connector brands; a claim of MC4 compatibility is not sufficient evidence for a proposed mixed connection. The contractor should identify the approved connection components and installation documentation.
An unused roof bay still needs assessment of its supporting structure, attachment method and condition. Show drains, access routes, rooftop equipment and planned building work on the proposed layout. Establish whether existing mounting members are to be reused, extended or left untouched, and who is responsible for any roof repairs. The PV mounting design service is a relevant discussion path.
Request review of the combined installation's AC cables, switchboard, protection, earthing and control interfaces. Include the existing generator, UPS or export controller in the drawings. Ask for the proposed work and isolation sequence to be agreed with the site electrical team, with the production interruption and responsibility for restarting existing equipment stated in the offer.
Give the utility the proposed total configuration, distinguishing module DC capacity from converter AC output. Section 3.3 of the Net Metering Guidelines 2025 sets capacity conditions linked to sanctioned load and, for applicable voltage classes, transformer capacity. It also describes a separate consideration route above the contracted-load limit. An existing approval does not establish that a proposed larger configuration is accepted.
Ask the relevant distribution utility what revised application, drawings, metering or inspection it requires for this site. List those dependencies separately from installation work. Require a quotation that separates assessment, retained-asset repairs, new equipment, integration and utility-related work. Identify who resolves a fault at each old/new interface and obtain the applicable equipment and workmanship terms in writing. Keep monitoring access, account ownership and the existing service provider's involvement explicit. Use the solar EPC catalogue to identify the requested services, including system design and integration.
Ask for updated drawings, equipment schedules, configuration records and an agreed commissioning report. IEC 62548-1 addresses PV array design; IEC 62446-1 addresses documentation, inspection and commissioning of grid-connected systems. Specify the applicable editions and the tests for the altered installation with the responsible designer.
