- PDAC: Computer Controlled Aerobic Digester — EDIBON: A digester for studying the aerobic breakdown of organic matter in wastewater sludge. The reactor vessel is aerated and stirred, and temperature, dissolved oxygen and pH are logged, so students can follow the reduction of organic load and the oxygen demand of the process.
- PDANC: Computer Controlled Anaerobic Digester — EDIBON: An anaerobic digestion unit supplied with two packed digesters so that the process can be run in one stage or split into two. It is used to study the stages of anaerobic digestion, gas production and the effect of loading rate and temperature on sludge stabilisation.
- AWTC: Computer Controlled Anaerobic Wastewater Treatment Unit — EDIBON: A unit for investigating anaerobic biological degradation of wastewater under controlled conditions. Temperature, pH and feed rate are regulated to maintain microbial growth, so students can follow organic load removal and biogas generation through a full treatment cycle.
- PEFC: Computer Controlled Flocculation Test Unit — EDIBON: A six position jar test unit for studying the removal of dissolved and colloidal matter by coagulation and flocculation. Each beaker has its own adjustable speed paddle, so students can vary dose, mixing speed and settling time and compare the resulting floc and supernatant quality.
- PEAIC: Computer Controlled Aeration Unit — EDIBON: An aeration unit for studying the oxygen transfer characteristics of diffused air systems. Students measure the oxygenation capacity of the tank and examine how air flow rate, water temperature and water chemistry affect the overall transfer coefficient.
- PCCAC: Computer Controlled Water Quality Control Unit — EDIBON: A unit that pumps water from a feed tank into a stirred transparent tank where conductivity is regulated by dosing, then on through the process line. It is used to teach continuous water quality monitoring and closed loop control of conductivity, pH and temperature.
- SPFC: Computer Controlled Sedimentation, Precipitation and Flocculation Unit — EDIBON: A unit for studying the physico-chemical treatment of water, covering chemical precipitation, flocculation and settling in one flow line. Students dose reagents, follow the formation of floc and measure the clarity of the treated water leaving the settling section.
- POAC: Computer Controlled Advanced Oxidation Unit — EDIBON: An advanced oxidation unit that generates hydroxyl radicals by combining ultraviolet radiation with hydrogen peroxide. Raw water is dosed in a transparent tank and passed through the reactor, so students can measure the destruction of organic pollutants against dose, contact time and UV intensity.
- PPTAC/1: Computer Controlled Water Treatment Plant (filtration, adsorption, and ion exchange) — EDIBON: A small treatment plant that links depth filtration, activated carbon adsorption and ion exchange in a single line. Students follow raw water through each stage and measure turbidity, organic removal and conductivity to see what each operation contributes to the finished water.
- PPTAC/2: Computer Controlled Water Treatment Plant (filtration and ion exchange) — EDIBON: A treatment plant that combines depth filtration with ion exchange. It is the simpler of the two EDIBON water treatment plants and is used to teach solids removal followed by demineralisation, including resin exhaustion and regeneration.
- PFADC: Computer Controlled Dissolved Air Flotation Unit — EDIBON: A dissolved air flotation unit in which pressurised air is released into the treated stream so that fine particles rise and are skimmed off. Students dose coagulants, adjust recycle ratio and saturation pressure and measure the removal achieved in the flotation cell.
- PPFAC: Computer Controlled Activated Sludge Process Unit — EDIBON: A bench scale activated sludge plant with aeration and settling stages that reproduces the operation of a municipal treatment works. Students break down organic matter with aerobic cultures and study sludge age, recycle rate, settleability and effluent quality.
- PPBC: Computer Controlled Biofilm Process Unit — EDIBON: A trickling filter unit in which wastewater is distributed over a packed medium carrying an attached biofilm. It is used to study fixed film treatment, including hydraulic and organic loading, recirculation and the removal achieved across the filter depth.
- EFLPC: Computer Controlled Deep Bed Filter Unit — EDIBON: A deep bed filter that removes suspended solids from raw water as it passes down through a granular medium. Students follow head loss with time, measure filtrate quality and carry out backwashing, which covers the core rapid gravity filtration experiments.
- ROUC: Computer Controlled Reverse Osmosis/Ultrafiltration Unit — EDIBON: A membrane unit that performs tangential flow filtration by both reverse osmosis and ultrafiltration. Two variable speed pumps set the feed conditions, so students can measure permeate flux and rejection against pressure, cross flow velocity and feed concentration.
- PEAC: Computer Controlled Adsorption Unit — EDIBON: An adsorption unit with two activated carbon columns that can be operated in series or in parallel. It reproduces the behaviour of adsorption in physico-chemical water treatment, allowing breakthrough curves and bed exhaustion to be measured under different flow rates.
- PDSC: Computer Controlled Sedimentation Tank — EDIBON: A continuous flow sedimentation tank for demonstrating the settling of discrete particles. Students measure removal efficiency against overflow rate and detention time and observe the flow pattern through the tank, which underpins primary settlement design.
- PEIFC: Computer Controlled Filterability Index Unit — EDIBON: A unit that determines the filterability index of a water sample using a bed of granular material, normally sand, chosen by the student. The measurements taken allow the filterability of different waters and media to be compared before a full filtration design is attempted.
