Choosing a rooftop solar configuration.

For a Bangladeshi factory the choice between on-grid, hybrid and off-grid is not a question of which technology is better. It follows directly from what the site is trying to achieve: the lowest cost per unit of energy, continuity of production through an outage, or power where there is no grid at all. Each configuration is the correct answer to one of those, and the wrong answer to the others.

Best suited to: The lowest cost per unit of solar energy on a site with a reliable grid connection.

Typically runs in: Factories, commercial buildings and institutions with a stable connection and daytime consumption.

What the site needs: A stable grid connection, roof area and structure to suit, and the net-metering approval path.

Best suited to: Keeping production running through grid interruptions while still cutting the energy bill.

Typically runs in: Manufacturing sites where an outage stops a line, and facilities with loads that cannot be interrupted.

What the site needs: Space and ventilation for storage, a defined list of critical loads, and the grid connection.

Best suited to: Sites with no grid connection, or where extending the grid is not practical.

Typically runs in: Remote installations, field facilities and sites where a connection is unavailable.
