Vacuum ultraviolet excitation system giving continuous wavelength selection from 110 nm upwards, using a continuous wave deuterium source with a specially designed nanosecond flashlamp for lifetime measurement. The path from excitation monochromator to sample is evacuated through a light guide and the sample area is flushed, because air absorbs at these wavelengths.
