SSM is used to measure the stresses in a thin membrane under pressure. Strain gauges on the membrane are read as pressure is raised, so radial and tangential stresses can be found and compared with plate and shell theory.

MVV is used to study the bending of a cantilever whose section is not symmetrical about the load plane. The beam can be rotated about its axis and deflection measured in two directions, showing how the principal axes govern the deflected shape.
MDLE is used to determine the deflected shape of loaded beams. Dial gauges along the span record deflection under point and distributed loads, so the elastic line can be plotted and compared with results from analytical methods.
MDB is used to measure the deflection of curved members such as circular rings, semicircular arches and quadrant bars. Loads are applied and dial gauges record the movement, allowing results to be compared with strain energy methods.
