Brand: Karl Kaps | Category: Medical Equipment
The SOM4OPHT opens a new generation in the Kaps cataract range, running a dual LED system in which coaxial field illumination and a dedicated red reflex source are switched and dimmed independently from the touchpad. Three swing-in filters extend its use: green (red-free) for vascular contrast, orange (blue-blocking) to reduce blue light reaching the patient's eye, and blue for fluorescence diagnostics. Five memory slots store complete profiles covering zoom position, focus setting, XY coordinates and the intensity of both LED sources, which makes it well suited to clinics where several surgeons share one microscope. A true stereo observer lets the whole team follow the procedure in three dimensions, an advantage over monitor viewing alone for training clinics.

Built for ENT clinics and surgical centres, the Pro ENT motorised combines an apochromatic motorised 1:6 zoom with motorised fine focusing so sharpness can be set to the millimetre from a handle button or footswitch. The motorised vario lens covers a working distance of 200 mm to 400 mm without objective changes, which saves time and protects sterility in the surgical field. Electromagnetic Free Motion brakes release at the press of a handle button and lock the head again the moment it is let go, with mechanical balancing keeping movement even when cameras or observer optics are fitted. Integrated LED illumination of roughly 50,000 hours runs quietly and without noticeable heat, with cold light or xenon available as options.
What separates the Basic+ from the Basic is agility. A motorised XY coupling with a 50 x 50 mm range of movement lets the microscope head be repositioned from the foot control panel, so the surgeon's hands stay clear of the operating field during phacoemulsification, aspiration of lens fragments and IOL implantation. The same 5x apochromatic magnification changer and coaxial cold light fibre optic illumination with the GG 475 retina protection filter carry over from the Basic, along with built-in IR and UV filters. Kaps treats the model as an open platform: the binocular wide-angle swing tube 0-210° can be retrofitted, and assistant tubes and documentation accessories can be added as requirements grow.
The SOM examination series has been a fixture in ENT practices for decades and is aimed at clinicians who want an uncomplicated but highly precise diagnostic instrument. A 3x or 5x magnification changer works with apochromatically corrected, interchangeable objectives from f=200 to 400 mm, and the optional Kaps Variflex-100 covers 220 mm to 320 mm from a single compact lens with integrated lens protection. Mounting on the wall, on the ceiling or directly on the treatment unit makes it a practical answer where floor space is scarce. Because the build is modular, video documentation and the Kaps LED upgrade can often be retrofitted to older units years later.
