How long does a plasma tool installation take in Bangladesh?
The realistic sequence from purchase order to first qualified process, what sets the duration of each phase, which parts can run in parallel, and the site works that usually decide the answer.
A research group places the order for a plasma etch tool in January and puts the first experiments in the plan for March. In practice the tool runs its first qualified process somewhere in the second half of the year, and almost none of the delay is the manufacturer's.
The only duration in the sequence you get in writing is the factory build time, quoted at order. Everything after it depends on decisions your own institution controls, which is useful, because it means the timeline is largely yours to influence.
The phases, and where the time goes
Order to specification freeze. The build does not start until the configuration is final: gas list, substrate size and holder, electrode and matching network, generator, pumping package, chiller, and the electrical supply. Bangladesh runs at 50 Hz, single phase at 230 V and three phase at 400 V, and getting that wrong at order is a common cause of a tool arriving that cannot be energised. Every change after freeze restarts part of the build.
Factory build and factory acceptance. The quoted lead time. If the gas chemistry or the substrate is unusual, ask for a factory acceptance test with your conditions and send someone or attend remotely. Finding a problem in the factory costs days; finding it in Dhaka costs a return engineer visit.
Packing and freight. Sea freight is measured in weeks, air freight in days at several times the cost, and a large chamber may not be an air freight option at all. Insurance and the incoterms decide who is responsible when a crate is damaged, which is worth settling before it happens.
Customs clearance. Classification, payment documentation and any institutional duty exemption paperwork. Incomplete paperwork means the crate waits at port and accrues storage charges. Start this while the tool is still being built, not when the vessel arrives.
Delivery to the room. Crate dimensions and weight against door widths, corridor turns, lift capacity and floor loading. Measure the full route before the order, including the tightest corner. Tools have been craned through windows in Dhaka because nobody measured a staircase.
Site works. Exhaust duct and stack, gas cabinet and lines, cooling water or chiller, electrical supply and earthing, abatement, and the bench or plinth. This is where most of the calendar goes, and it is the one phase nobody schedules.
Installation and commissioning. An engineer travels, which means a visa and a booked window. Assembly, leak checking, pump down, gas line purge and leak test, plasma strike, matching, and the manufacturer's standard process demonstration.
Process qualification. Etch rate, uniformity and selectivity on your material, with your substrates and your recipe. This normally happens after the engineer leaves, and it is the phase that turns an installed tool into a working one.
What can run in parallel
Start the site works the week the order is placed. Duct, stack, gas room and electrical supply have their own procurement and their own contractors. If they begin when the tool arrives, they add their whole programme to the end of the timeline instead of disappearing into it.
Order gases and cylinders early. Specialty gases, cabinets and detection equipment have lead times of their own, and a tool with no gas is not a tool.
Get the paperwork moving during the build. Import documentation, exemption certificates and the engineer's visa invitation can all be prepared months ahead.
Train people on something else. Send the intended operators to a facility that already has a similar tool. The learning curve after installation is otherwise added to the timeline.
Prepare substrates and write the procedures. The standard operating procedure, the booking system, the induction and the safety assessment can all exist before the crate does.
What causes the delays here
Separate tendering for the site works. The tool is procured on one process and the civil and mechanical works on another, often through e-GP with its own cycle. A tool that arrives before the duct contract is awarded waits in its crate, and the crate is not a good storage condition in a Dhaka monsoon.
Budget years that do not align. Equipment money released in one financial year and site works money in the next is a common and entirely avoidable cause of a long gap. Raise it at the proposal stage.
Rooftop work in the monsoon. Stack and duct work on a roof stops for weather. Scheduling it for the dry season is free and saves weeks.
Access. A lift with a weight limit below the crate, or a corridor with a fixed obstruction, converts a delivery into a rigging job with its own permits and its own wait.
Engineer availability. Manufacturer engineers are scheduled months ahead. Confirm the installation window as soon as the shipping date is known, and tell them immediately if the site slips, because the next available slot may be a long way out.
