Compare laser diffraction, dynamic light scattering and image analysis, then prepare a useful Microtrac or laboratory instrument enquiry with sample and method requirements.
A particle-size analyser should answer a defined material or process question. A powder acceptance test, a nanoparticle dispersion and a particle-shape study may require different methods. Start with the sample and the result you need to report, then compare instruments. VVON's Microtrac catalogue and physical-analysis category provide starting points for a shortlist.
| Method | Measurement focus | Questions for the enquiry |
|---|---|---|
| Laser diffraction | Size distribution inferred from light scattering | Wet or dry dispersion, sample range and required reporting basis |
| Dynamic light scattering | Hydrodynamic size of particles dispersed in liquid | Liquid properties, concentration and expected nanoparticle range |
| Image analysis | Particle size and shape measured from images | Shape descriptors, sample presentation and inspection requirements |
These are distinct measurement approaches in Microtrac's technology overview. The instrument family name alone is not a method specification. If your contract requires a particular procedure or comparison with an existing result, include that requirement before asking for a price.
Prepare a short sample schedule: material identity, expected size, moisture or dispersion medium, approximate quantity and handling restrictions. Include both a typical batch and a difficult batch where possible. Explain whether the result will support incoming inspection, process adjustment, research or release testing. Do not send proprietary or hazardous samples until the receiving laboratory has agreed the handling and test scope.
Microtrac SYNC combines laser diffraction and dynamic image analysis; the manufacturer's SYNC page describes the combined platform. NANOTRAC FLEX belongs to the DLS range; its manufacturer reference describes a probe-based approach. These examples illustrate different purchase routes, not a recommendation that either fits every sample.
BIOBASE and Infitek also list physical-analysis instruments in the catalogue. Compare the actual method and offered model, not the brand name or the widest advertised range. A viscometer, sieve shaker and particle-size analyser can sit near one another in an equipment list while answering different questions.
A preparation instrument can change the material you intend to measure. If a mill, crusher, sieve or splitter forms part of the workflow, state why it is needed and document the preparation procedure. The Retsch catalogue and sample-preparation guide help define that part of the purchase. Our separate article on differences between sieve and optical results explains why changing method needs careful comparison.
Request the exact instrument, measurement accessories, wet or dry handling configuration, software, initial consumables and required utilities. Separate the supply price from any demonstration, method-development work, installation, training or service agreement. Agree what evidence will show that the delivered configuration meets your purchase specification. Send VVON your sample and measurement brief to begin the discussion. Manufacturer references reviewed 28 September 2026; availability and delivery require a current quotation.
Share your application, equipment requirements and procurement timeline. Our engineers can help clarify the configuration and scope for your enquiry.
