Choosing a first instrument for a new materials research group in Bangladesh
One line item, a group that wants everything, and a decision that shapes the next five years. Buy the measurement you need every week and cannot borrow, not the one that looks best in the proposal.
A new group gets its first equipment grant with one substantial line item on it. Six people want six different instruments, the proposal named an electron microscope because that is what proposals name, and the decision made in the next month will shape what the group can publish for five years.
Start from the measurement you cannot borrow
Write two lists. The first is every measurement the group's next three papers need. The second is which of those can be obtained somewhere else: a shared facility at another university, BCSIR, a national laboratory, or a collaborator abroad who will run a batch of samples.
Anything on the first list and not the second is a candidate. Anything you can send out once a month, send out. Turnaround at a shared facility is slow and irritating, and still far cheaper than owning an instrument that runs six days a year.
Then apply the frequency test. The right first instrument is the one your students need weekly, which is normally not the most impressive one on the list. A measurement you take twenty times a week, in your own building, at ten at night, is what changes how fast a group works.
Three honest candidates
An atomic force microscope. No vacuum, no cryogen, no consumable beyond cantilevers, and it works in an ordinary air-conditioned room. It gives quantitative topography, roughness and film thickness at a step, and with the right modes it gives mechanical and electrical properties too. For a group working on thin films, coatings or nanostructures it is the highest number of useful measurements per taka of any first purchase.
A tabletop scanning electron microscope. Fast, easy to teach, and it produces the images that students and reviewers expect. It is the right answer if imaging is genuinely the bottleneck and there is no accessible SEM nearby, and the wrong answer if there is a good SEM twenty minutes away that accepts external samples.
Electrical characterisation. A four point probe station, a Hall effect measurement, or a source measure unit with a probe station. Unglamorous, comparatively inexpensive, and for a group working on semiconductors, transparent conductors or thermoelectrics it produces the numbers the papers actually turn on.
What the first instrument has to survive
Your power supply. Buy the voltage stabiliser and the UPS with the instrument, not after the first failure. Most first instruments in Bangladesh are damaged by a voltage event rather than by use, and the protection costs a fraction of the repair.
Your building. Anything needing a vibration-isolated room, a stable temperature or a low magnetic field is a building project as well as a purchase. In year one, choose an instrument that works in the room you already have.
Your staffing. Name the person who will run it, budget their training, and train a second person immediately. Utilisation is a function of that individual, and a group with one trained user has an instrument that stops when they graduate.
Your consumables budget. Cantilevers, filaments, probes, calibration standards and a service visit are recurring costs. If they are not in the grant, put them in the departmental budget before the instrument arrives.
Your service route. Ask who supports the instrument in Bangladesh and whether spares are held locally. An instrument with no local service becomes a display cabinet the first time it fails.
