ESH(2x1m): Hydrologic Systems, Rain Simulator and Irrigation Systems Unit (2x1 m) — EDIBON: ESH(2x1m) is a 2 x 1 m tank with a rainfall simulator for catchment studies. Rainfall intensity, ground slope and drainage arrangements are varied so runoff, infiltration and irrigation schemes can be modelled. Computer controlled versions and a 4 x 2 m size are also published.
ESH(2x1m)/S: Hydrologic Studies Unit — EDIBON: ESH(2x1m)/S is a reduced version of the hydrologic systems tank aimed at surface and groundwater studies. Rainfall is applied over an adjustable bed so runoff hydrographs, infiltration and well drawdown can be measured. A computer controlled version is also published.
RHU: Rainfall Hydrographs Unit — EDIBON: RHU is used to generate and measure rainfall runoff hydrographs. Rain of controlled intensity falls on a sloping catchment bed and the outflow is recorded over time, so the rising limb, the peak and the recession of the hydrograph can be studied.
RSES: Rainfall Simulator for Soil Erosion Studies — EDIBON: RSES applies controlled artificial rainfall to a soil bed so that erosion can be studied. Slope, rainfall intensity and surface cover are varied while runoff and the sediment it carries are collected and weighed. A computer controlled version, RSESC, is also published.
RFS: River Flow Simulator — EDIBON: RFS is a channel with a mobile bed for modelling river behaviour. Discharge and slope are varied so meandering, bank erosion, deposition, scour around piers and the effect of river training works can be reproduced.
STU: Sediment Transport Unit — EDIBON: STU is a recirculating flume for sediment transport studies. Flow rate and bed slope are adjusted so the threshold of particle motion, bed load transport and the formation of ripples and dunes can be observed and measured.
PDFD: Drainage and Seepage Tank — EDIBON: PDFD is a glass sided tank for studying seepage and land drainage. Sand is placed between adjustable water levels and piezometers record the phreatic surface, so flow nets and drain spacing can be examined. A computer controlled version, PDFDC, is also published.
PTSA: Soil/Water Model Tank — EDIBON: PTSA is a model tank for soil and water interaction studies. Sand or soil is placed in the tank with controlled water levels so seepage, capillary rise, drainage and the effect of buried structures can be observed.
EFAS: Ground Water Flow Unit — EDIBON: EFAS is a bench unit for demonstrating groundwater flow. Water passes through a sand bed between adjustable head tanks while piezometers along the bed record the water table, so the Darcy equation and well behaviour can be studied.
PAHS: Soil Moisture Suction Sand Unit — EDIBON: PAHS is used to measure the relationship between soil moisture content and suction. A sand column is drained in stages while tensiometers record suction at different heights, giving the soil moisture characteristic curve. A computer controlled version, PAHSC, is also published.
PL: Demonstration Lysimeter — EDIBON: PL is a lysimeter for measuring the water balance of a soil block. Rainfall or irrigation input, drainage output and the change in stored water are recorded so evapotranspiration can be calculated over a period.
PPD: Drain Permeameter — EDIBON: PPD is used to measure the permeability of soils and filter media. Constant head and falling head tests are run on a packed column while head and flow are recorded, giving the coefficient of permeability of the sample.
PEIF: Filterability Index Unit — EDIBON: PEIF is used to determine the filterability index of a suspension. The sample is filtered under controlled pressure while the volume of filtrate is recorded against time, giving the specific resistance of the cake. A computer controlled version, PEIFC, is also published.
PEFP: Permeability/Fluidisation Studies Unit — EDIBON: PEFP is used to study flow through packed and fluidised beds. Water or air passes upward through a granular bed while pressure drop and flow are measured, giving the permeability and the minimum fluidisation velocity. A computer controlled version, PEFPC, is also published.
PEDI: Demonstration Infiltration Unit — EDIBON: PEDI is used to measure the rate at which water infiltrates into soil. Water is ponded on a soil column and the fall in level is recorded over time, so the infiltration curve and the final steady rate can be obtained.
PDS: Sedimentation Tank — EDIBON: PDS is a settling tank for studying the removal of suspended solids. Flow rate and inlet concentration are varied while samples are taken along the tank, so settling velocity and removal efficiency can be determined. A computer controlled version, PDSC, is also published.
ESED: Sedimentation Study Unit — EDIBON: ESED is a column apparatus for batch settling tests. Samples are drawn from ports at different depths over time, so the settling velocity distribution of a suspension and the interface subsidence curve can be plotted.
ESHC(2x1m)/S: Computer Controlled Hydrologic Studies Unit — EDIBON: A stand alone unit for advanced study of hydrological processes in ground and river environments. A sand filled test tank is served by rainfall and inflow systems, so students can run catchment, runoff, groundwater and channel experiments on a 2 by 1 m working area.
RSESC: Computer Controlled Rainfall Simulator for Soil Erosion Studies — EDIBON: A metal frame carrying a rainfall simulator that can be placed directly on the ground for field work or used with its accessories in the laboratory. Students measure soil loss against rainfall intensity, slope and ground cover to quantify erosion.
HVFLM-4: Mobile Bed and Flow Visualization Unit (working section: 4000x610 mm) — EDIBON: The longer version of the mobile bed flume, with a 4000 by 610 mm working section. The extra length allows longer river reaches and larger structures to be modelled, so bed forms and flow visualisation can be studied over a greater development distance.
